Mr. Fred Lyndon Bartlam

Fred Lyndon Bartlam was born in a house between Dixie and Boston, Georgia on August 30, 1940 to George and Nellie Bartlam. In the early hours of April 3, 2024 at Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi he went home to The Lord. During his time in this world Fred lived in many places, but Madison County, Florida was his home. It’s where he grew up. It’s where he played football for the Madison High School Red Devils, sold popcorn at the Woodward Theater, and leapt from tree stands into Blue Springs. Madison Country is the setting for so many of the stories that delighted his children. Stories that are already being passed on and rooting their way into the family’s shared history. Most importantly, Madison County is where Fred developed life long, sustaining friendships. When he returned to Madison in 1998, he was able to reconnect with old friends and neighbors. He also made important new friends. These were people that brought joy, comfort, and true companionship to Fred as he lived out the rest of his life in Madison. These people have also become part of the family’s story. Even as a small child, Fred knew exactly what he wanted to be, and that was to become a U.S. Marine. As soon as he graduated high school, he headed straight for Paris Island. Though he was honorably discharged from The Corp; he remained a Marine until the day he died. Fred never took the beauty of God’s creation for granted. He especially loved The Great Smokey Mountains and the crystal-clear springs that can be found all along Florida’s rivers. He had a passion for music. He was a fisherman and an often-frustrated golfer. By far the greatest source of fun and aggravation in his life was the University of Florida football team. He loved the Gators. Fred was a man of strong faith in, and love for, The Lord. He made the last 12 years of his walk with the congregation at Lee First Baptist Church. Fred loved his church family dearly. First Baptist was a great source of Godly joy and satisfaction for him. Whether it was through Farm Share, teaching Sunday school for over a decade, or simple fellowship, it was there that God blessed him with many opportunities to love his neighbor. Fred tried to share that love everywhere he went. Because he loved God, he could truly love others. As we notify friends and loved ones and prepare to say goodbye to Fred, the word that repeatedly comes up is kindness. A true legacy. He is greatly loved. He will be sorely missed, but he has gone to a far better place. God grant that we see you again Fred. Go Gators and Sempre Fi Fred is survived by his four children, Fred Bartlam Jr., Bruce (Rhonda) Bartlam, Erik (Jenny) Bartlam, and Scarlett (Xan) Vineyard. He is further survived by six grandchildren: Bruce (Caroline) Bartlam Jr., Jared (Christine) Bartlam, Jordan (Brooke) Bartlam, Jake Vineyard, Reid Vineyard, Blake Bartlam and four great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend their love and appreciation to two friends in particular, Lee Dixon and Shaun Shea. A special thank you to those that cared for and comforted Fred in his final days.
