Mrs. Vicki Howerton

Vicki Herring Howerton of Madison, Florida, passed away on July 8th of 2023 in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 27, 1949 in Lakeland, Florida to Corrine McCuller and W.V. Herring. Her parents passed away when she was young, so Vicki spent her formative years in Sparta, Georgia with her Aunt Hortense and Uncle Tommy Sigman. Eventually, she moved to Waycross, Georgia to live with her Aunt Arlie Bell and Uncle Grover Nall, completing her high school education in Waycross, Georgia. Upon graduating high school, she attended Valdosta State College and spent her summers with her Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Coolidge McCullar. While attending Valdosta State, she met her lifelong friends–and the love of her life–Colin Howerton; whom she was married to for over 52 years. She graduated from Valdosta State College with her Bachelors of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. Vicki loved Madison, Florida and she was devoted to the town and her lifelong friends. She was an active member in the First United Methodist Church of Madison, Florida, where she served on numerous committees and was a member of the Dickinson-Williamson Circle. She delighted in going out to lunch with her friends and loved the Supper Club. She was a member of: Madison Garden Club; Madison Country Club; Madison Women’s Club; and the Tuesday Morning Bridge Club. She was recognized for her support of the arts at Valdosta State University through her volunteerism. She previously worked at Madison Academy, where she was a substitute teacher and a librarian. She also worked at Madison County Memorial Hospital as the Community Relations Coordinator. Additionally, she worked at North Florida Community College, where she was a Certified GED Administrator. Most recently, she was working at Beggs Funeral Home as an Administrative Assistant in Madison, Florida. She is survived by her husband, Colin Howerton of Madison, Florida; her daughter, Memy Howerton Hayes (and husband, Tommy) of Powder Springs, Georgia; as well as her beloved grandchildren, Kelly and Cole Hayes, that she cherished dearly. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Howerton Blackmon; her three brothers-in-law: Tommy Howerton (and wife, Michelle), Gaines Howerton, and Sandy Howerton; nephews, John Blackmon (and wife, Michelle) and Matt Blackmon (and wife, Brooke); great nephews and great nieces: Nora, Davis, Emmala, Palmer and Wells; cousins: Randy McCullar (and wife, Patti), Robert Nall, Leland Nall (and wife, Shirley), Calvin Nall (and wife, Vonnie), Tommy Sigman (and wife, Emily), Steve Sigman and Grover Sigman. Vicki’s Celebration of Life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Madison, Florida on Friday July 14th at 11:00 AM. Her visitation will take place on Thursday evening, July 13th, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Beggs Madison Chapel. Interment will follow her Celebration of Life at Oak Ridge Cemetery of Madison, Florida.
