Mr. Roy Curtis Smith

Roy Curtis Smith, age 94, passed away November 25,2023 in Madison, Florida. He was born in Clayton, New Mexico on November 28,1928, to Emmett E. & Nola Womack Smith. Soon after this, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl occurred, causing his family to move frequently to different parts of New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. He had many interesting stories about events that occurred during this time. He was living in California at age 16 when he graduated from high school. He held many jobs including the California Forestry Department & the oil fields in Texas. Roy joined the Air Force in 1951 during the Korean War. He spent 2 1/2 years in Japan and was stationed at Moody Air Force Base upon his return to the states. He met Catherine Gibson while stationed in Valdosta and they married in September 1954. After his military discharge, he went to work at Madison Marble Works in March 1955, and purchased it in 1964. He worked hard, building the business so his children could work with him. He joined Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in 1959, was baptized at Cherry Lake, and was a faithful member. It was not unusual to hear him singing or whistling early in the mornings. He loved to dance and continued to do so until his eighties. Roy served as county commissioner for eight years, donating his salary to the hospital for four years. Roy and Catherine were wonderful parents to their five children, setting a example for them on marriage, how to treat people, work ethics and life in general. Roy was predeceased by his parents Emmett and Nola Smith, his wife, Catherine Gibson Smith, his son Bob G Smith, grandchildren Valerie Miller and Eric Sindt, brother Joe Bob Smith, sisters Rubye Holden and Jean Young. He is survived by his daughter, Nola (David) Sindt, sons Curtis (Melinda), Emmett (Debbie), and Doug (Lynn) Smith, seven grandchildren (Caleb, Ryan, Erika, Nicholas, Jedidiah, Jesse and Mary Hannah), and twelve great grandchildren with two more expected shortly. Pastor Steve Witt will be officiating a memorial service for Roy on Saturday Dec 2, 2023 at 1:00PM at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 4084 Rocky Ford Rd. Madison, Florida 32340.
